REVIEW: The Hydrant, Brighton - 25/6/2010
Dynamic rock triplet We Are Jonah
launched
their debut album 'I Saw a
Stranger Take a Dead Man's Place'
at Brighton's newly-refurbished The Hydrant in central Brighton on
Friday, June 25th.
Singer-guitarist, Dan Lank,
delivered his
thoughtful and thought-provoking lyrics and catchy melodies,
underpinned by Mike Hussein’s fluid and flawless drumming and
Tom Robson’s creative and solid bass lines.
We Are Jonah proved themselves to
be a
versatile, textured and reflective rock outfit with captivating and
appealing tunes packed with attitude and passion.
Dan's searching and highly
memorable songs
frequently centre on a shoutable refrain that resounds like a war cry.
Highlights of the night include
debut single
'Something Beautiful',
an uncompromising rock/pop song edged with hope. The defiant and
anthemic 'Treason'
also wowed the crowd, as did the effervescent 'Ghost
of Dawn', which showcased the
musical abilities of all three band members.
As with many of the tracks,
Mike’s
tight, syncopated and inventive drumming lays the foundation for
Tom’s pulsating bass, whilst Dan conveys challenging phrases
like, “Is this the kind of life you dreamed of once in
another time...Do you feel free?” and
“It’s easier to see who you’ve been than
who you are...”.
The album’s title track, 'I
Saw a Stranger Take a Dead Man’s Place',
has its roots in folk ballads, showing another side to Dan’s
skilful guitar playing, but still managing to retain Jonah’s
ever-advancing rock style.
The night’s set list even
included
an up-tempo Girl’s Aloud cover which saw Jonah drawing the
crowd in closer to the stage.
We Are Jonah were supported by
Brighton band
Clayton, and robust Eastbourne rockers, Skye.
