Writing these things is tricky.
It's hard to
know whether to try and sound funny, or trendy, or clever. So instead
I'm going to tell you why we're in a band together.
Oddly enough though, to explain why we're in a band, I need to explain
why we're not in a band. We're not in a band to try and change the
world. We're not in a band for girls, gold or glory. We're not in a
band to be 'the next anyone', or to 'push musical boundaries', or even
to be on the radio. It's not that those things are bad. It's just not
the centre of what we do.
We're in a band because every now and again, a song connects with
someone. A song makes sense in a way it never has before, maybe even
takes on a meaning far from that for which it was written. But for that
person, the song is theirs... That moment, that's why we do what we do.
It's always risky to write the words faith and music on the same page.
Write too much and it can alienate some; write not enough and it
disguises something at the very centre of who we are. So it's worth
mentioning that we share a common belief in a God who loves us and
invented music in the first place.
For us, that belief is more than just a trendy spiritual sideline, it
bleeds down into the notes and words of every song. But it's never our
aim to forcefeed anything to anyone.
Mikey plays the drums. He's very good at it. He's also young enough to
keep us trendyish.
Tom plays the bass and handles the technical stuff. We've been playing
in bands together since we met ten years ago when we both liked the
same girl. He's married to Emily who is our craft director. He also
cares more about coffee than any barista i've ever met.
And I'm Dan. I play guitar, and I sing. I write lots of the songs, and
I
drink lots of Tom's coffee.
That's who we are, where we came from and what we do. And at the grave
risk of sounding obvious, We Are Jonah.
